As intended, June was a month of lower mileage – even lower than I planned. As unintended, it was NOT a month of building strength and core. It was a month of rest. I took a 12 day straight break due to travel and getting sick.
At first the break was welcomed. My body was loving the rest and it was nice not having to worry about fitting in runs in the midst of traveling up the east coast.
By the end of June I was getting antsy! I was ready to run! Ready to form a plan! This was around the time when we figured out we’ll be staying put rather than moving across the country, so I was able to start forming that plan!
I’m spending July building back up, and also really focusing on strength – core, squats, lunges, jumps, etc. I’m in a good rhythm of running MWF and either Saturday or Sunday. Tuesday and Thursday I cross train at our gym – spin bike or elliptical.
My “training plan” starts August 5 – which just so happens to be 18 weeks out from the Huntsville Marathon. Not a coincidence! More on that to come! :)
I ran 6.1 miles pretty hard on Sunday, 6.8 miles Monday, took Tuesday off, and did 800 repeats yesterday. Tomorrow is 3 x [200-300-400]. Thus, today was an easy day. It can be so hard to run easy sometimes. My body was definitely in full agreement, feeling tired and wanting to simply stretch my legs. Yet I still felt restless. I kept thinking about the upcoming HALF and had to fight the urge to push the pace. Part of running a good race or a PR is good health, which comes in part from rest. I fought the urge, and ran 5.6 miles at a very comfortable 8.40/mile pace. There will be plenty of other days to throw the hammer down and run hard.
Last week was a post-Cora high – 30.8 miles. The week culminated in a 10 mile run on Saturday – 2 laps around the Racoon Mountain reservoir. I ran with 2 of the girls on my team – it was a great run – solid pace. It did POUR DOWN RAIN on us the entire 2nd lap, but that made it kinda fun! :)
Yesterday, we did a tempo run on the roads from Covenant (aka – BIG hills). Today was supposed to be an easy day, but I ran with my top runner so it wasn’t particular easy for me!
I may do a 5K on Sunday – it’s the Race for the Cure. 2 years ago at this race, I broke 20 minutes for the 1st time since high school. While I know that won’t happen on Sunday, I hopefully can still race strong.
I am registered for the Philadelphia Half Marathon on November 22. I’m not following a training plan because I figure if I run with the girls during the week, and then get in between 10-12 every weekend, that I’ll be good to go. I’ve been thinking about a Spring marathon, and have narrowed it down to a few options. It’ll probably be a few months before I decide. So more on that later!
1 last thing – I’ve added a tab above that has a link to my online training log. I recently discovered the website Running Ahead and I like it! It’s a bit limited in a few areas, but I really like how when I open up my training log, it gives totals, a bar graph of my runs, etc. Feel free to look at that any time. I’m trying to include as many details of my workouts as possible. Let me know any time if you have questions about specific training that I’ve done or your own training.
